I hate when people get promoted based on faulty information. In late 2016, we elected Mr. Donald Trump as the President of the United States. A lot of people were influenced by Mr. Trump’s false sense of merit, because “he was a successful businessman and entrepreneur.” It is true that he has made enormous amounts of money, but he has also declared bankruptcy a couple of times. That is nothing new and not exactly my point. My point is: Everyone is a businessman nowadays.
The Evolving Businessman
We chose an old school, childish businessman to represent our country when we live in a country where the idea of ‘business’ is not the same as it was 20 years ago. As Americans, we need to be looking forward rather than looking backwards. Ya know, look to propel the United States forward, not revert back to the “good ‘ol days” like every movie and TV show is trying to do. There needs to be someone willing to see these trends. So, now I ask, what is a businessman nowadays? (You are about to go down a small rabbit hole of seemingly pointless definitions to prove a point.)
- Business: a usually commercial activity engaged in as a means of livelihood.
- Livelihood: means of support or existence
- Businessman: one who transacts business.
- Success: favorable or desired outcome
Basically, a businessman is anyone and everyone who does anything or everything to survive. Ha! You probably love the vagueness, but realistically, we are in a world where literally anyone can be a successful businessman if they have a few resources available to them.
For example, Washington Post mentions the six-year- old child who received $11 million between 2016 and 2017. Yes, $11 million. He did not do it with a lemonade stand, because that is no longer the way to conduct childhood business.
Ryan simply reviews toys on his YouTube channel “Ryan ToysReview.” In addition Ryan was one of the highest paid YouTube stars of 2017. Who would have thought that people could make so much money with random YouTube videos? So infuriating, right? Such a simple task.
YouTube is not the only avenue that people are receiving shit tons of money. There is a formal job position known as a Social Media Influencer. What is that? It is a person who can persuade individuals simply because he or she has a lot of followers. Think of all the blogs, Instagram posts, and Snapchat videos designed to
“influence” people and promote designer brands. That sucks, because I want to be considered better than my neighbor. All my neighbor does is post on Instagram all day long and somehow receives enough money to afford a massive house and “one-up” me on everything. I do not own my own business; however, I am considered a businessman because I engage in commercial activities as a means of existence. Being a businessman is not a hard task.
The way I see it is Merriam- Webster is saying that Ryan is a businessman AND Ryan did not need financial resources, unlike The Donald (who admitted to receiving at least $9 million from his father). Time to be real: We are all businessmen than Donald Trump, including Ryan and he is only six years old. Maybe we should elect him for president! Hmmm.. Age requirement of 35.
Well, Ryan, we look forward to you running in 2048 to become the next Kid President!
